College Out Reach

Overview

The Flight Deck Display Research Laboratory (FDDRL) has supported internships in an attempt to encourage interest in the sciences. In collaboration with organizations like the Foundation for a College Education, De Anza Community College, the San Jose State University Foundation, and the Ames Air-Ground Integration Laboratory, FDDRL has created programs in which students learn about different types of research, as well as learn how to design, implement, and analyze a controlled experiment. In response to expressed interest, students also received instruction on how to create graphics and design web sites based on usability principles. Summer interships with the FDDRL have also included group projects in which students gained experience in teamwork and participated in leadership roles. Students also worked with and interacted with NASA Ames researchers to learn about various research areas so that they can begin the journey to discovering their careers of interest.

This summer students Eboni Dunbar, Drizella Moreno, Kristina Orozco, and Ameena Sweeting present a study that they conducted with Dr. Min-Ju Liao and Mrs. Stacie Granada-Vigil on the effect of brightness on the detection of intruder aircraft. Interns learned how to use an eye tracker to attain data on eye fixation patterns. Click here or the image to the left for the full video.

For the purpose of exposing the students to modern developments in information technology students were also asked to produce graphics and recreate the Foundation for a College Education (FCE) web site. Student evaluated and generated a report, which recommendations were submitted to the FCE organization for future redesign of their web site. Applications that students used to complete the projects included Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver. Interns were able to modify html code resulting in changes in web page style and content, as well as create complex multi-level navigation menus using cascading style sheets. A sample of their work can be viewed below:
