Biography:   Michael Freed, Ph.D., is the project lead and original developer of Apex. His work in artificial intelligence focuses on reactive planning and scheduling, particularly emphasizing the problem of intelligent multitasking under time-pressure and uncertainty. In Apex, this work is combined with research directed at the problem of "usable autonomy" -- creating tools that minimize the time, expertise, and inventiveness required to construct new autonomy applications. Dr. Freed is at NASA Ames by appointment through the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition where he serves as autonomy lead for the NASA/Army Autonomous Rotorcraft Project and as deputy lead for the Intelligent Systems Mission Planning and Execution project for the Mars Science Laboratory mission.
