Sleep Research on the NEUROLAB Space Shuttle Mission

David F. Neri, Ph.D. of the NASA Ames Fatigue Countermeasures Group served as a Co-Investigator on a science project that flew on the Neurolab Space Shuttle mission (STS-90) in April 1998. Neurolab was a Spacelab research mission dedicated to the study of life sciences and focusing on the most complex and least understood part of the human body - the nervous system. Dr. Neri participated in the project headed by Charles A. Czeisler, Ph.D., M.D. of the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The project, "Clinical Trial of Melatonin as a Hypnotic for Neurolab Crew," was one of two projects carried out by the "Sleep Team." The second project was headed by John B. West, Ph.D., D. Sc. of the University of California at San Diego and was titled "Sleep and Respiration in Microgravity."
