Advanced Air Traffic Management Display

3-D air traffic visualization using VR techniques can be used to improve situation awareness and reduce workload for air traffic controllers in future air traffic control scenarios.

Image of Researcher wearing a head-mounted virtual reality displayOne of the objectives of this project was to develop and evaluate possible format displays for air traffic, including VR, to improve situational awareness.

Another objective was to develop interactive air traffic path planning and new forms of conflict visualization techniques for optimizing safe traffic flow.

The overall approach was to design, develop, test and evaluate manipulative interfaces for route specification and modification of normal procedures, due to weather, runway or gate closures.

"Virtual Vision" was created using computational techniques to simulate future consequences of route modifications, predictors based on flight plans, runway assignments, and aircraft situation.

3-D air traffic visualization techniques have been incorporated into Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) displays designed by Honeywell, and have become the technical standard for new designs.
