A research study on pilot responses to abnormal situations conducted by Dr. Stephen Casner from the Human Systems Integration Division was published in the February 2, 2015 print edition of Aviation Week & Space Technology.
The article, titled "NASA Tackles Memorized Pilot Training," states: "Responses to abnormal events by 18 seasoned Boeing 747 captains and first officers in a NASA simulator study hint that the broader pilot workforce is not gaining expertise in handling unexpected but realistic problems during recurrent training sessions. Based on the results, the agency suggests several enhancements to airline training curricula, including developing techniques that throw pilots more 'surprise' curveballs in training scenarios that have become too rote."
