NASA Ames Research Center recently celebrated Earth Day by
featuring several programs, projects and technologies which are making a difference as we combat the challenges of climate change that impact our daily lives. As shown by the devastating 2020 California wildfires, our first responders are facing unprecedented challenges in the face of climate change as they fight to protect lives, property and valuable resources.
One such project, called
Scalable Traffic Management for Emergency Response Operations, or STEReO, is creating a deployable, stand-alone information system which helps emergency responders coordinate crewed and uncrewed aircraft, track ground personnel, integrate data taken from the air, and present it all in one, cohesive package which allows emergency responders to capture the full emergency operation on one screen.
NASA's
Airspace Operations Laboratory is leveraging its experience in
air traffic management for unmanned aircraft systems, autonomy, communications and human factors research to develop STEReO in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service. The STEReO team has completed a number of flight tests in 2021 as they continue to refine and test its software tools and vehicles in simulated demonstrations.
